A couple weeks ago, I stepped out of my comfort zone and decided to try a float tank. At the time, I was 32 weeks pregnant and heard a few of the benefits and thought “why not”. I did zero additional research and drug a friend along for the fun. I was expecting a spa like experience in large, hot pool and quickly realized that it was more of a dark, isolated coffin with lukewarm water that I was about the climb into…(insert nervous giggles + sweating). I instantly wondered what I was getting myself into, but they say YOLO right?! And in I went… for 60 minutes….
During that 60 minutes I laughed, I did a few synchronized swim moves (because who wouldn’t) and I wondered what the heck I was doing alone in a dark tank, but then I got out of my own damn head and relaxed! That was key!
Maybe like me, you aren’t familiar with what floating is. Here’s a brief 101: A typical tank is 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and holds 10″ of water with 700+ lbs of epsom salt. The solution is more buoyant than the dead sea, which allows a person to float on the surface. Air freely flows in and out of tank and the door never latches (this was an initial fear of mine). The water itself is an average of 93.5 degrees, which helps you lose track of your body. The tank is virtually soundproof and when the light is off, it’s completely dark. No gravity, no touch, no sound, and no sight. The perfect environment for healing the body and mind.
We had an opportunity to speak with Ryan, one of the owners at Fadeaway and he was very honest about floating. He warned us that it generally takes a few times to truly understand floating. He even admitted that he wasn’t blown away by his first experience, but he continued to float because of the benefits and the opportunity to unplug from life. And now, he owns his own successful floatation center in West Des Moines.
There are a lot of benefits associated with floating. A few of the common ones: reduce stress, lower blood pressure, improve sleep, heal the body and mind, disconnect and meditate. For more information and research about all the benefits, click here.
I’ve had many people ask me about my experience and if it’s worth it. The honest truth: everyone should try it. Although my first experience wasn’t quite what I imagined, I will be returning for more floating pleasure. Now that I know what to expect, I’m even more excited to shut off and enjoy that uninterrupted time. If you are unsure, hear this out: “Float tanks don’t DO anything. The float tank user doesn’t do anything. You get in, lie down and relax. The tank is a controlled, consistent, neutral environment in which you simply exist for 60 or 90 minutes. The tank frees you from all external stressors. No gravity, no pressure, no distractions. There is no other experience quite like it. Herein lies the hard truth. YOU, the user, create the entire float experience. From beginning to end. The good and the bad. You are the variable. YOU are 100% responsible for the experience you have inside the float tank”.
